News about First 4 Figures’ upcoming Yu-Gi-Oh! products continue to trickle out from its weekly Q&A live streams and the First 4 Figures Official Collectors Club on Facebook. Is a Yu-Gi-Oh! PVC figure confirmed yet? What will the first release be and when will pre-orders happen? Here is a roundup of this past month’s news featuring answers to these questions and more.

During the January 4 live stream, F4F’s CEO Alex Davis revealed that not only are Blue-Eyes White Dragon and Dark Magician in the works but also Red-Eyes Black Dragon and Dark Magician Girl. When asked about making more monsters or characters, Davis noted that these four monsters “were the ones that polled the best. And we’ll continue to go from there to see how that goes on.” A fan suggested adding Egyptian monster tablets as extras and Davis called them “nice ideas.”

Then, in the January 11 live stream, Davis stated that the first Yu-Gi-Oh! pre-order will either be for Blue-Eyes White Dragon or Dark Magician. Look for that to happen after March or April following F4F’s My Hero Academia launch, he said.

On January 16, Davis offered a sneak peek in the F4F OCC of part of Blue-Eyes White Dragon’s design:

Many fans asked about its color and pointed out that, despite its name, Blue-Eyes White Dragon isn’t exactly pure white. Davis replied that its paint job will be “nice and metallic. When you see Meta Ridley — you’ll get it!”

Davis fielded more fan questions in the January 18 live stream. Blue-Eyes White Dragon is “most likely” going to be F4F’s first Yu-Gi-Oh! product, he said. In addition to a resin statue, a “PVC [figure] is possible and it’s very — 90 percent — gonna happen,” he added. One fan wondered if adding a card display and card stand with the statues would be possible. “It’s a great question. We haven’t figured that bit out yet,” replied Davis. “Once we look at getting it nailed down, then we can think about what possible extras — but I’ll keep that in the back of my mind.” Another fan asked about Blue-Eyes White Dragon’s dimensions and Davis responded with some gestures:

The PVC figure will be small, while the resin statue will be enormous. That’s awfully large for a statue, isn’t it? But given the size of Meta Ridley, I don’t think he’s exaggerating.

Finally, in the January 25 live stream, a fan asked about how hard it would be to include an exclusive Yu-Gi-Oh! card with the statues, to which Davis replied “I don’t know, let’s talk about it.”

First 4 Figures' Yu-Gi-Oh! announcement poster featuring Blue-Eyes White Dragon and Dark Magician

Back in September, 4K Media announced that it had partnered with high-end collectibles maker First 4 Figures to produce a Yu-Gi-Oh! resin statue, leading to a lot of buzz about what monsters might get the company’s special treatment. Since then, F4F has remained tight-lipped, not even acknowledging that it has acquired the Yu-Gi-Oh! license. But all that changed today during its weekly Q&A live stream, with F4F confirming that it has multiple Yu-Gi-Oh! products in the works!

“[We are] already deep in the works, concept-wise. Not in the physical yet, but deep in terms of having the concept there,” said Alex Davis, the owner of F4F.

“Getting the approval to go to the next stage is–” Davis paused, then pointed at his UNIQLO Dark Magician shirt. “Blue-Eyes White Dragon as well. Some others in the works.”

With Yu-Gi-Oh! being a phenomenon that spans the gaming, anime, manga, and movie worlds, Davis hopes that the property’s mass appeal will introduce more people to First 4 Figures and bring in more anime fans as the company continues to expand its anime products.

“And I can say it won’t just be resins,” added Davis. “At least that’s the plan. Don’t quote me on that. If everything goes according to plan. And also because our strategy of bringing in more and more TFs [true form PVC figures], SDs [super deformed PVC figures], PVCs in general, as something that’s developed over time — and actually, the time that we went for the Yu-Gi-Oh! license, [PVCs weren’t] really on our radar. But as we move forward into new licenses, we’re looking at trying to do both [PVCs and resins].”

Davis says he wants to create an ecosystem where F4F can bring in new customers with its lower-cost PVC figures and eventually convert them into buyers of high-end resin statues.

Seto Kaiba, shocked by Gozaburo Kaiba's plays in episode 120

For the past several months, there has been a lot of chatter that First 4 Figures might be releasing a Yu-Gi-Oh! statue. Unlike producers of mass-market collectibles, F4F is renowned for making ultra high-end statues, each individually numbered and costing in the hundreds of dollars.

Anime series like Berserk, Cowboy Bebop, One Punch-Man, and Samurai Champloo have all been blessed by the company’s masterful touch, as have video game franchises like Castlevania, Kirby, The Legend of Zelda, and Sonic the Hedgehog.

With its incredible track record and reputation, it’s no wonder so many people are excited about the possibility of F4F taking on the Yu-Gi-Oh! brand. Now, the much-whispered-about F4F Yu-Gi-Oh! figure has finally been confirmed!

Speaking to media industry publication World Screen, Jennifer Coleman, VP of licensing and marketing at 4K Media, announced that First 4 Figures has a resin Yu-Gi-Oh! statue in the works!

Coleman further recognized the importance of the collectibles market, stating that “Offering bespoke and limited-edition collections is something retailers and consumers all around the world are looking for.”

While neither Coleman nor F4F has revealed which Yu-Gi-Oh! character or monster will be getting a statue, F4F has already divulged a lot of information in the past…

Yu-Gi-Oh! and First 4 Figures: What Do We Know So Far?

First 4 Figures gauges interest in various anime and video game properties by polling its followers in its First 4 Figures Official Collectors Club Facebook Group. (Note: Admin approval is necessary to view this group and the Facebook links I’ve posted below.)

In May 2016, F4F’s owner, Alex Davis, posted a basic poll about Yu-Gi-Oh! figures, just to see if this property could sell. At the time, there was not much interest among voters for such products. But Yu-Gi-Oh! fans were loud and very persistent, spending many, many months rallying in favor of the King of Games. Eventually, their effort paid off and resulted in close to 700 positive votes.

There would be no more Yu-Gi-Oh! polls from Davis until August 4, 2017, when he asked fans what Yu-Gi-Oh! figures they would be interested in seeing. Blue-Eyes White Dragon garnered the biggest following with over 800 votes, followed by Dark Magician and Red-Eyes Black Dragon. Voters also suggested nearly a hundred other options.

Davis followed up quickly in an August 14, 2017, poll, stating that the previous poll “really had my attention.” Would fans be interested in a $400+ Blue-Eyes White Dragon that measured 15 to 25 percent larger than Good Smile’s 2011 Blue-Eyes White Dragon? For comparison, Good Smile’s figure with its base measures about 18 inches tall and costs over $850 at the then-exchange rate. About two-thirds of the voters were in favor of such a design.

Then, in September 2017, Davis polled the audience about the possibility of a $400+ Dark Magician (again, about two-thirds voted in favor) and about their favorite Yu-Gi-Oh! series (not surprisingly, the original was the overwhelming favorite).

On October 7, 2017, Davis relayed some very good news. “Time to speak to the licensor to talk about how you guys pushed for Yu-Gi-Oh!” he wrote. “Thanks for your support!” His post indicated that he was writing from New York City, the home of 4K Media.

Davis admitted in a November 2017 Q&A live stream that he ignored Yu-Gi-Oh! for a year and a half because “it didn’t have a great fanbase.” But after interest grew so significantly during that period of time, the results were too substantial for him to ignore. He further revealed that he had submitted all of the legal paperwork, product proposals, and counterproposals necessary to get the ball rolling. The subsequent approval process could take months.

On January 12, 2018, Davis stated in a Q&A that he was “looking very closely into Yu-Gi-Oh!”

Then, on January 20, he introduced a new poll about the Blue-Eyes White Dragon, “just in case we can snag the license.” Would fans like to see a “chunky” design of Blue-Eyes, similar to the artwork in the manga? Or a “svelte” design like the “YAP1” Blue-Eyes from the 10th Anniversary Pack? Voters were almost evenly split. Ultimately, Davis said in his January 26 Q&A that he would go for a size between svelte and chunky.

On May 23, Davis posted a photo of himself posing in front of Dark Magician and Blue-Eyes White Dragon at 4K Media’s booth at the 2018 Licensing Expo in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Since then, Alex Davis and First 4 Figures have been mum about their involvement with Yu-Gi-Oh! and 4K Media. In several of the weekly Q&A live streams, Davis has simply brushed off questions about Yu-Gi-Oh!, stating that there is nothing to report.

Now that 4K Media has formally revealed its relationship with First 4 Figures, maybe there will be more announcements coming down the pike…

So what statues do you think F4F will release? Blue-Eyes White Dragon? Dark Magician? Both? What high-end Yu-Gi-Oh! figures would you like to see?

Update (December 28): Why choose only one? First 4 Figure made a formal announcement today confirming that both Blue-Eyes White Dragon and Dark Magician — and more! — are in the works.
