Yuya, Yuto, Yuri, and Yugo's hands in Yu-Gi-Oh! ARC-V manga chapter 38

Genesis Omega Dragon, its body fully merged with Eve’s, attacks Yuya directly, but Yuya narrowly saves himself with a Pendulum effect.

Yuto, Yuri, and Yugo notice their bodies beginning to fade away again. They don’t have much time left. It’s a miracle that they’ve been able to remain with Yuya for this long, so it’s time they finish Eve off. Yuya and his brothers Pendulum summon their ace monsters back to the field and attack G.O.D.

G.O.D. counters by using its effect to place another Nova Portal into its Pendulum zone, thereby stopping the attack and ending Yuya’s turn. This, however, was all according to Yuya’s plan.

During G.O.D.’s turn, Yugo uses Clearwing Fast Dragon’s ability to negate G.O.D.’s effect and reduce its attack strength to zero. Yuya is safe. Next turn, he can use Clearwing again to reduce G.O.D.’s attack power, giving him the opening needed to attack and defeat it. And since G.O.D.’s Pendulum zones are full, it can’t use its effect again to stop Clearwing. Victory is within reach.

But G.O.D. is ready for them. It uses Nova Portal’s Pendulum effect to destroy both Nova Portal cards, freeing up its Pendulum zones and giving it the opportunity to use its attack- and effect-negating abilities once again. All of Yuya’s work was for nothing. The situation seems insurmountable.

G.O.D. offers Yuya an alternative way out: give up Adam’s power and surrender the duel. Surrender and receive a world where he and his family can live in peace, without the World Illusion, and without memories of G.O.D.

Yuya imagines what might have been, had his father not triggered the World Illusion. His brothers, alive, having a picnic with him on his birthday. Lots of laughs as they brag about whose gift is the best. His father, safe, joining in their fun. What a wonderful birthday.

Yuya’s heart is filled with sadness. He lifts up his right hand and looks at it, ready to lay it on his deck in surrender. But Yuto, Yuri, and Yugo each place one of their hands on top of his, snapping Yuya out of his escapist thoughts. They died protecting him, and they are proud of that truth. They promise to always be with him.

As their bodies continue to fade away, the three use the last of their strength to enter Yuya’s deep consciousness, where the Adam Factor tree stands. They place their hands upon it, transforming it into power for Yuya.

A brilliant light glows from Yuya’s deck.

Thoughts

Is it just me or did Yuya succumb to G.O.D.’s temptation a little too easily? G.O.D. ruined Yuya’s life. His family’s lives. The lives of Eve and her allies. G.O.D. extinguished an entire living universe. Corrupting space-time to satisfy individual happiness? Unforgivable! Yuya understands all of this.

But now? After G.O.D. offers Yuya new hope?

“You mean I can benefit from these selfish desires? Maaaaybe G.O.D. isn’t so bad after all…”

Yuya, what are you doing?! I guess your outlook on life and moral compass can quickly change when you start a duel with excitement and anticipation only to end up plunging into despair.

Fortunately, Yuto, Yuri, and Yugo are there the entire time to keep Yuya anchored to reality. Even though their remaining selves are fading away, they have never been stronger or more important to Yuya than at this moment.

One thing I wish the story could discuss further is the nature of Yuto, Yuri, and Yugo’s psychological connection with Yuya, and why they are fading away. By some unexplained phenomenon, their consciousnesses were able to remain within Yuya after the World Illusion. But this connection, for whatever reason, isn’t permanent and now they are gone. It’s heartbreaking that their familial bonds aren’t strong enough to keep them together.

Yuya is confirmed as the youngest Sakaki brother. Yugo says so! Dawww.
