Silhouettes of Yugo, Yuri, and Yuto as they toss flowers in Yu-Gi-Oh! ARC-V manga chapter 35

One bright, ordinary morning at the Sakaki house, Yuri and Yuto are preparing gifts for Yuya. Yuri arranges a sparkling bouquet of roses, while Yuto crafts a tantalizing boxed lunch filled with Yuya’s favorite treats. Whose gift will Yuya enjoy more on his birthday today? As they boast about the superiority of their creations, they realize that they need to hurry and meet up with their brother before Yugo does and gives him his own present.

Yuri and Yuto rush to the Maiami racing circuit, where Yugo is taking part in a championship Turbo Duel. Yuya is standing along the sidelines, watching Yugo set up on the track. Yugo had promised to win the event and give Yuya the trophy for his birthday present. Yuri and Yuto arrive just as the race begins.

Mere moments into the race, the ground begins to violently shake. The earth splits, causing Yugo to tumble off his Duel Runner and crash. Yuya rushes to him. When the tremors don’t stop, Yuri realizes that this might not be an ordinary earthquake. The crowd at the stadium begins to panic and rush outside. Yuto receives a phone call from his dad.

“Something terrible is about to happen to the world,” says Yusho, clearly in distress. “The Genesis Omega Dragon card…is out of control!

Reiji Akaba’s father, his mind warped by G.O.D., had taken the card to a military laboratory to draw out its energy without caring about the consequences. Yusho Sakaki steals the card and discovers that the only way to stop its energy emission is with the World Illusion. He orders the boys to head to his laboratory and use the escape pods to hide in their basement.

The Sakaki brothers flee from the racetrack and begin to head out of the city. As the tremors continue, many of the high-rises behind them start to collapse. Yuya spots a huge piece of falling concrete about to crush them, so he pushes his brothers out of the way. Yuya himself falls and is knocked out. Yugo carries Yuya on his back as they continue their escape.

When the boys arrive at the lab, they discover the facility completely destroyed, with just one escape pod intact. The pod can only fit one of them. They know exactly who should take it. Yugo, Yuto, and Yuri place Yuya inside and send him away. The remaining three enjoy their final moments together as the world around them is erased.

Thoughts

I’ve always felt that one of the most delightful parts of Yu-Gi-Oh! is watching the characters go about their day-to-day lives, enjoying themselves without a care in the world. Forget about saving the universe or whatever high stakes frequently accompany the card game. The simple moments, like those at the beginning of this chapter, are also the most charming.

They also make the tragedy of the World Illusion that much sadder. The Sakaki brothers didn’t deserve this. They didn’t choose to be the children of a researcher who dabbles with danger. They aren’t soldiers who are trained to deal with trauma and asked to have to fight for their future. This is so unfair to them. It’s no wonder Yuya’s brothers tried so hard to stop Yuya from regaining his memories.

Naohito Miyoshi does a splendid job showing the end of the world.

Yuto, Yuri, and Yugo, watching the World Illusion wipe out their world in Yu-Gi-Oh! ARC-V manga chapter 35

The white semicircle in the background pushing against a border made up of speed lines, with the buildings rising up and disintegrating while the boys are standing calmly in the foreground — it’s such an evocative effect. The guys on the latest Weekly Shonen Jump podcast point out that the image reminds them of Akira and the ending to Fight Club.

The moment when the boys toss the roses toward the oncoming destruction is also sad and beautiful.

And, hey, it’s canonically confirmed — Yuto is the best husbando! Ever since I saw him wearing a business suit in chapter 7, I knew he had potential. Always keep an eye on the boys who wear neckties.
