Yuya and Yuto arriving in Eve's domain in Yu-Gi-Oh! ARC-V manga chapter 33

Yuya Sakaki, restless following his win over Sora Shiunin, calls out to Eve, demanding that she show herself. His voices echoes through the halls of her hideout. A lighted hallway appears before him, inviting him to Eve’s domain. Yuya follows the trail of lights and encounters a vortex at the end of the path. Yuto asks Yuya if he will go after her. Of course he will.

Yuya calmly steps through the vortex. In front of him is a narrow pathway. And all around him is the unending vastness of space, littered with the light of distant stars. Yuto thinks they have entered a gap in space-time, a realm that exists outside their usual time and place. Suddenly, a bright vortex appears above the path just ahead of them. Eve steps through the vortex gracefully.

“You have the Genesis Omega Dragon card,” states Yuya.

“Yes. G.O.D. is in my hands,” Eve responds.

“Ren, Isaac, Sora… All your companions suffered defeat for that card. Is it really worth that much?” asks Yuya.

“If happiness exists only in a time that has been lost, then we must rely upon G.O.D.’s power,” says Eve.

Yuya is upset by her words. Yuya doesn’t understand how Eve can manipulate time and space to achieve personal happiness. But Eve contends that the happiness of the world as a whole is only possible thanks to this selfishness. Yuto thinks it’s fruitless to try to change her mind; to get through to her, Yuya must take the G.O.D. card from her. Eve is confident that she will triumph and lays claim to the Adam Factor sleeping within Yuya. With it, she says, she will truly awaken G.O.D.

The two begin to duel. Yuya quickly Pendulum summons, setting up a field where his monsters can be neither destroyed nor damaged. Eve is unimpressed with his “unbeatable” line up.

Eve readies her field by setting her Pendulum scales, then Pendulum summons Mystic Factor Melchior, Caspar, and Balthazar.

Yuya is dumbfounded by the sudden presence of the three high-level monsters before him. But Eve has only just begun. Using these monsters’ abilities to return themselves from the graveyard to the field, Eve is able to use them to Fusion, Synchro, and Xyz summon in succession. In mere moments, Yuya finds himself face to face with three legendary monsters: Phantasm Emperor Trilojig, Timelord Progenitor Vulgate, and No. XX Infinity Dark Hope.

“Only I can control this ultimate deck, because I have spent so long crossing space and time,” proclaims Eve. “Someone like you cannot hope to match an opponent like me!”

Thoughts

This chapter is incredible. Eve and her monsters are incredible. I got chills watching her make her plays. There are so many great callbacks to other Yu-Gi-Oh! series and characters.

When Eve Pendulum, Fusion, Synchro, and Xyz summons, her chants are very similar to ones that have been used by other Yu-Gi-Oh! protagonists.

The monsters themselves seem to reference boss monsters used by other villains. Phantasm Emperor Trilojig evokes the name of the Sacred Beasts, but also looks like it would be right at home as an Arcana Force monster. The Timelord monster is obviously like Z-one’s Timelords, but it’s name — “Progenitor” — suggests that it predates the others. Eve even has one of the Numbers, a mysterious “XX,” which presumably represents an unknown value. Even though Yu-Gi-Oh! ZEXAL ended years ago, the Numbers still haven’t all been revealed, yet here is Eve showing up with a new one. Where did it come from?

All of this inevitably leads to the question of whether the worlds in the different Yu-Gi-Oh! series are somehow connected. Or maybe this is just the author doing something fun for the fans. Regardless, Eve is clearly a special character who has lived her life doing extraordinary things across time and space. And the significance of the location where they are dueling isn’t lost on me. It’s some kind of tear existing outside of space-time. Maybe this is like the Twilight Zone, where fantastical characters like Eve and story elements that would otherwise be impossible can exist.

Amid all the excitement of Eve’s deck, let’s not forget Eve’s opening play — the construction of a gate. Last chapter, Adam tells Reiji Akaba about seeing a gate that opens up to a wasteland of planets. How coincidental is that?

I love this page of Eve here as she descends in front of Yuya.

She looks so elegant, but so sad.

  1. Yuya mentioned that he knows how it feels to lose someone that you loved. I wonder if he’s talking about only his father during World Illusion, or maybe he has recovered part of his memories about Yuto, Yugo, and Yuri. Speaking about that, Eve almost spill the truth about who Yuto actually is! Darn it! I wonder how long we have to wait until the past is revealed!

  2. The guy in the first picture you posted looked just like Yugi.

  3. @Kazanova Interesting that you mention Yuya’s memories of his other personalities. When Yuri and Shiunin were dueling, they also talked about what happens to people who’ve died. It seems that Yuri and the other personalities lost someone important. This might have been one of the memories that they had been trying to destroy in Yuya’s mind. But now that they’re fading away and can’t do their job, Yuya could be regaining that memory. I’m excited to learn who Yuto is too!

  4. @Loco Nitwit Hahaha. Do you listen to the Weekly Shonen Jump podcast? Whenever Yuto shows up, the guys on the podcast are always like, “Is that Yugi?”

  5. @ravegrl I sometimes follow the podcast. I did not know that. Gotta leave me a link there?
