Freddy Sheinfeld giving a walkthrough of the Yu-Gi-Oh! The Dark Side of Dimensions Main Title Music

What goes into composing and orchestrating Yu-Gi-Oh! music for the big screen? In his latest video, Yu-Gi-Oh! composer Freddy Sheinfeld takes an in-depth look at the main title music of Yu-Gi-Oh! The Dark Side of Dimensions, breaking down its different parts and expounding on his writing process. Composers, arrangers, and Yu-Gi-Oh! music enthusiasts — this video is for you! And even if you don’t know anything about music composition, you can still sit back and enjoy the intricacies of a great score.

Sheinfeld begins by outlining his goals of easing the audience into the movie with an introduction that is slow-paced but that also incorporates the small, fast, visual elements that are happening on screen. He then walks through the instruments — the brasses, woodwinds, strings, and choirs — and how each of them contributes to the texture, color, and feel of the visuals. All throughout, he emphasizes how he carefully uses them to match the pacing of the visuals and build expectation, from the opening shots in space, building up to the huge moment when Kaiba’s space station appears, to when the title appears.

Sheinfeld concludes by saying that he next wants to make a video breaking down one of the action cues, which is “super, super complicated.” If you like what you see and want to learn more, let him know!
