Yuya, standing in the moonlight, hoping that he and Reiji will someday be allies in Yu-Gi-Oh! ARC-V manga chapter 18

Reiji Akaba has dropped Yuya Sakaki’s Pendulum scales to zero, sealing away his ability to Pendulum summon. Or so Akaba thinks. But the Dueltainer has one more trick up his sleeve. Yuya bypasses his Pendulum scale and calls forth a new monster — Odd-Eyes Phantasma Dragon, an Overscale Pendulum. Akaba is mortified.

“Its Pendulum scale is zero?!” he cries out.

Yuya activates Odd-Eyes Phantasma Dragon’s special ability to decrease the attack strength of Akaba’s D/D/D Destiny King Zero Laplace, then attacks. But Zero Laplace can negate its destruction once for turn. Akaba is safe for now.

“Yuya Sakaki, let me show you the true power that my father left me,” he asserts.

“Reiji, wait!” says Yuya. “Let me prove that what I told you is true! That someone is controlling G.O.D.!”

“I already know that!” replies Akaba. “You would never bring me to a place like this for no reason.”

Yuya and Akaba realize that they are not alone. An orb has been floating above their heads, watching their every play and relaying the information to two distant spectators. A blinding flash of light emanates from the orb and a Duel Runner surges forth. It screeches to a stop between Yuya and Akaba. Yuri and Yuto recognize the driver.

“My name is Ren. G.O.D. is in the hands of my mistress Lady Eve,” states the masked man. He expounds on their goals to awaken G.O.D. and declares that Yuya and Akaba both possess the Adam Factor needed to accomplish their goals. Ren would like to seize the duo’s powers right now, but the damage that their high-powered monsters have caused during the duel has weakened the structure of the cavern.

The walls and ceiling of the cavern begin to crack and crumble. Dust and small pieces of debris land on the shoulders of the duelists as larger stones start to crash down all around them. A portal opens overhead beside the orb camera. Ren promises to duel them both and makes his retreat.

The cavern collapses on itself, but Yuya Sakaki and Reiji Akaba are safe after hopping on their monsters and taking to the skies.

“Reiji, do you believe me now?” Yuya asks beneath the moonlit sky. “We share a common enemy. If we work together, I’m sure we can beat them!”

“A new enemy may have appeared, but I still haven’t forgiven your father,” replies Akaba. “So I will defeat them on my own!”

Elsewhere, Sora Shiunin is floating in a serene haze. A voice calls out to him. It’s his sister, Miu. Someday, he will create a world where they can be together, Sora promises her.

Sora awakens suddenly from his slumber and finds himself in a hospital bed.

“You are here because of injuries sustained in a duel with Yuya Sakaki,” says a long-haired bespectacled man. There is a large scar on the left side of his face covering his eye and cheek. Another man enters the room. It’s Ren.

“It finally begins,” he proclaims. “The real battle for G.O.D.!”

Thoughts

For all of Reiji Akaba’s talk of “zero” these past few chapters, it’s pretty funny that a Scale zero monster is almost what finally does him in. Reiji is a smart guy; he knows far more than he’s letting on. But if he knew that there was another power behind G.O.D. all along, why bother pursuing Yuya all this time? To avenge his father’s death? That seems petty for someone like him. Maybe he was expecting that Yuya would eventually be able to lure the enemy into the open as he’s done here. In that case…it’s all going according to plan. It’s a shame that Reiji and Yuya’s duel was cut short just as Reiji was about to unleash his true powers. But they will certainly duel again and, as Yuya hopes, may even ally at some point to take down Ren.

So not only is there an Adam Factor, but there is also an Eve Factor as well. Hmm, who might possess such a power? There aren’t that many girls in this story so far…

Speaking of girl, Yuzu had just discovered Yuya’s secret passage leading underground and was heading down there with Sawatari and Kurosaki as the cavern started to collapse. Yuya and Reiji had to ride on their monsters to even escape, but the trio have no such luxury. Why didn’t you help, Yuya?! What if they die in the cave-in?! Kurosaki’s comment is great though: “[Reiji Akaba] is too strong for something like this to kill him!”

Sora fan service — shirtless and without his short pony tail! So Sora is working with Ren and Eve. And Sora’s sister, Miu, first seen in a photograph in Scale 8, turns out to be a real person after all.

Great chapter. This story is going all sorts of places. It’s very exciting to finally see Eve, who’s clearly going to be a strong character and maybe even the big baddie that Yuya will have to ultimately duel.
