The sixth anime series of the Yu-Gi-Oh! franchise will be hitting televisions in Japan in Spring 2017! That’s the word from Shueisha’s Jump Festa 2017 event, where news of the series was unveiled today. The show will follow high schooler Yusaku Fujiki (pictured above), a boy who hates to stand out at anything. He manages to blend in with the crowd at school, but gradually begins to meet new people by dueling.

Yusaku embodies the theme of the new series — “Let’s take one step forward and try!” — which encourages children to take that all-important first step to try something new that they are interested in instead of becoming overwhelmed and just giving up.

The title and exact premiere date of the new series was not provided.

  1. The Yu-Gi-Oh universe is probably the only place where someone with a hairstyle like that is able to ‘blend in’… The suit (or is it a school uniform?) makes him look more serious and reputable though, all things considered I think this character design is way better than almost anything I’ve seen in ZeXal and Arc-V.

  2. LOL that hair! I was thinking the same thing. How are you supposed to not stand out when you wear your hair that way? I like the uniform/suit too, mainly because I just love suits and ties. It makes everyone look so handsome.

  3. Somehow i already like him!

  4. That’s not a bad thing! :D

  5. This is my favorite main character design since 5D’s. Yusaku is also an interesting name and a lot better to say than Yuya was. Judging from his brief description, it sounds like we finally have a main character who isn’t overly comedic.

  6. Could be. Do you think it’s more engaging to watch a main character who behaves seriously than comically?

  7. For me personally, it would be. While it would mean less comedic scenes, it would instead allow for more powerful characterizations which I appreciate a lot more in storytelling.

  8. I kind of agree. A lot of people were saying something similar when Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D’s came out. The darker, more serious tone of Yusei and the 5D’s story really contrasts the silliness of Jaden and the GX story (the earlier parts of GX anyway). It’s nice to mix things up like that to keep the Yu-Gi-Oh! stories and characters fresh. Effective characterization can be harder when using comedy, in my opinion, because humor is so subjective.

  9. The only thing I don’t like about Yusaku is that he has 3 hair colors like Yugi(who really has 3 different colors), which makes me believe Miyoshi was behind his design considering Yuya’s design. I’d be shocked if Takahashi did it.

  10. You mean Yugi’s hair color has become less special because another person now has three hair colors too?
