Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG card Rank-Up-Magic - The Seventh One

Most movies do not see their rankings improve after their first weekend in theaters, but Yu-Gi-Oh! The Dark Side of Dimensions isn’t most movies and it worked its magic this past weekend to buck that trend. As it enters its fourth week in Japanese theaters, Yu-Gi-Oh! held steady at number 9 for the week of May 5 through 13 before rising to number 7 in this past weekend’s rankings.

The top 10 movies for the weekend of May 14 through 15 are as follows. (In parentheses are the number of theaters showing the film / number of weeks in theaters.)

  1. Zootopia (347 / 4)
  2. The Magnificent Nine (307 / Debut)
  3. If Cats Disappeared From the World (289 / Debut)
  4. Detective Conan: The Darkest Nightmare (348 / 5)
  5. 64: Part 1 (319 / 2)
  6. Captain America: Civil War (336 / 3)
  7. Yu-Gi-Oh! The Dark Side of Dimensions (137 / 4)
  8. Crayon Shin-chan: Fast Asleep! The Large Attack on the Dreaming World! (339 / 5)
  9. Chihayafuru: The Last Verse (293 / 3)
  10. I Am Hero (282 / 4)

Unlike in previous weeks, the movie’s producers didn’t release any new factoids this past weekend about the film to incentivize fans to visit the theaters. But maybe they didn’t have to, since the Yu-Gi-Oh! OCG promotion that kicked off on May 14 is for the coveted Mahad the Protector Priest card. This fourth and final promo card will be included with ticket purchases through May 20, or while supplies last. And they may not last. Theatergoers took to Twitter this past weekend, mortified by how quickly tickets sold out. While the producers have not released any official comments about the boost in the rankings, it’s a fair bet that this card is what made the magic happen.

The next goal for The Dark Side of Dimensions is to hit 500,000 ticket sales. If it reaches this milestone, Yu-Gi-Oh! creator Kazuki Takahashi will produce a special illustration!

  1. Unfortunately, my geographical location and lack of education in Japanese renders me unable to purchase tickets. Alas! Keeping my fingers crossed for that illustration though.

  2. Looks like I was right about Mahad giving the movie a big boost. It has some good numbers now. The producers announced even more “Standing Ovation” screenings and almost quadrupled the number of theaters doing them since the last time. There are also some live commentary screenings in place too.

As far as movie promos go, for the 5th week theaters are giving one random promo out of the 4 promos to movie goers so they can get a chance to get cards they weren’t able to previously.

Hopefully all of this helps the movie reach 500k tickets.

  3. @WritchCodex Even though we aren’t able to contribute directly to ticket sales, we can still spread the good word and get people talking about the movie. Fan power!

@Atemu I’m sure we will reach that number. Yu-Gi-Oh! fans are great at banding together to make amazing things happen, no matter what languages we speak.
