As it enters its third week in Japanese theaters, Yu-Gi-Oh! The Dark Side of Dimensions remained steady in the rankings, coming in at number 9 for the week of April 30 through May 6 before settling in at number 9 this past weekend.

The top 10 movies for the weekend of May 7 through 8 are as follows. (In parentheses are the number of theaters showing the film / number of weeks in theaters.)

  1. Zootopia (347 / 3)
  2. Detective Conan: The Darkest Nightmare (348 / 4)
  3. 64: Part 1 (319 / Debut)
  4. Captain America: Civil War (336 / 2)
  5. Crayon Shin-chan: Fast Asleep! The Large Attack on the Dreaming World! (339 / 4)
  6. Road to High & Low (140 / Debut)
  7. Chihayafuru: The Last Verse (293 / 2)
  8. I Am Hero (282/ 3)
  9. Yu-Gi-Oh! The Dark Side of Dimensions (137 / 3)
  10. Terra Formars (326 / 2)

On Sunday, May 8, the cast of Yu-Gi-Oh! The Dark Side of Dimensions took to the stage at a gathering at Wald 9 Cinema in Shinjuku, thanking the audience for making the movie a success and relaying the excitement of playing their roles. They also announced that 310,000 people have seen the movie during its first 15 days in the theaters and that the movie is set to hit the international scene. The film heads first to South Korea in June later this year, while preparations for the rest of Asia, Europe, and the United States are already underway. Furthermore, they revealed that the movie will see a DVD and Blu-ray release in 2017.

Separately, producers revealed that Kazuki Takahashi, the creator of Yu-Gi-Oh! and the movie’s executive producer, participated in animating the film, personally drawing 186 frames himself. It must be time to head back to the theaters to try to pick out which sequence he animated, right?

  1. Looks like the Lemon Magician Girl promo was able to keep the movie at 9.

From what I’ve heard many of the fans are crazy for the upcoming Mahad promo. A poll of 10,000 people on the official Yu-Gi-Oh OCG twitter voted Mahad as the most wanted promo taking 51% of the vote so I’m eager to see if it can possibly increase the movie’s rank for this upcoming weekend. I believe the “Standing Ovation” screenings are also bringing in a lot of fans too.

  2. This poll? Yessss, hopefully everyone that voted actually goes to buy a ticket… or two, or three. As for the “Standing Ovation” screenings (this event I think you mean?), while I can totally see that kind of thing working in the U.S. (“audience participation” screenings of The Rocky Horror Picture Show and The Room come to mind, though those are kind of extreme), Japanese people don’t seem to be really into that. The need to keep quiet during a movie is too pervasive, notes some writers. Anyway, only a handful of theaters are participating in those screenings so I think the overall impact will be minimal. My guess is that the OCG promo is the bigger factor. I’m keeping my fingers crossed good news!
