If there’s one thing that Toei Animation’s 1998 production of the first Yu-Gi-Oh! anime is well known for, it is the show’s standout main cast of voice actors that, in my humblest of opinions, no other Yu-Gi-Oh! series to date has been able to match. Recently on Twitter, acclaimed voice actor Megumi Ogata reminisced about getting the role of Yugi and Yami Yugi in that series.

“I can feel the scent of darkness from you,” Ogata recalled the director telling her when she landed the role of the protagonist. The director further added that Ogata had “the air of Kaneto Shiozawa,” the late actor known for playing calculating, distinctively cold-voiced characters like Paul von Oberstein in Legend of the Galactic Heroes and Prince Demande in Sailor Moon. Shiozawa himself appeared as Shadi in two episodes of Toei’s Yu-Gi-Oh!.

They’re fitting comments, given Yami Yugi’s dark and unforgiving personality in Toei’s series…
