After 15 years, the Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters anime is restored in an HD remaster!
Broadcast begins Saturday, February 7 at 7:30 am on the TV Tokyo Network

My how time flies. After four years and three months on the BS Japan network, the Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters anime reruns end today, January 30, with episode 224. The series had been airing on the TV Tokyo-owned satellite network since October 2010. Prior to that, it enjoyed reruns on Animax and TV Tokyo. Beginning February 6, Yu-Gi-Oh! ZEXAL take will take Duel Monsters’ 5:00 pm JST slot on BS Japan’s Yu-Gi-Oh! Hour.

But don’t expect Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters to fade away anytime soon. As a mainstay on Japanese television since its debut in April 2000, the series will return without skipping a beat next week in its newest incarnation, Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters: 20th Remaster! As first officially announced in Shueisha’s third 2015 issue of Weekly Shonen Jump, TV Tokyo and its sister stations will begin airing the remastered series on February 7 at 7:30 am JST. Several duels, including Yuugi vs. Kaiba and Jounouchi vs. Marik, will return in “remastered” forms in this version of the show. TV Tokyo opened an official website for the show last week, but it is still largely empty.

  1. Hi. Where could i see the remaster once it premieres in japan? (hopefully some website puts an episode up) I would love to see how it looks compared the original, or if possible i would like to see you make a review about it. I love your reviews :3

  2. I wasn’t able to watch the episode because I don’t live in Japan, so I won’t be able to do a comparison. However, a lot of information has already been posted on Twitter and Japanese blogs. Here’s what we know:

    • The top and bottom of the video have been chopped off to provide a 16:9 aspect ratio. The official Japanese Yu-Gi-Oh! anime Twitter account @yugioh_anime provided an example screenshot of this before the show aired. This is in contrast to the BS Japan broadcast, which pillarboxed the video.
    • There is now a 20th Anniversary logo.
    • There are some differences to the opening animation, including the addition of the 20th Remaster logo below the Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters logo.
    • An ARC-V short was shown after the episode. Starlight Breaking News has some more screenshots.
    • There is some grumbling over the quality of the video, which has been upscaled. A true HD version it is not.

I don’t support copyright infringement so I won’t be linking to or providing any streams/uploads of the episode, but I’d imagine that there will be many more Tweets and Japanese blog posts about the 20th Remaster as the show continues to air. Check out #遊戯王 and #yugioh when an episode is airing. Twitter is probably the best place to start. Thanks for reading and understanding!

  3. Starlight Breaking News also just posted loads of screenshots and live discussion (in Japanese) from the broadcast.
