New Yu-Gi-Oh! Movie Coming in 2016December 12, 2014 at 7:20 am | Posted in Duel Monsters, Japanese, The Dark Side of Dimensions, Yu-Gi-Oh! | 2 Comments
The upcoming new Yu-Gi-Oh! movie is slated for a 2016 theatrical release in commemoration of the manga’s 20th anniversary! That’s the word from Shueisha’s January 15, 2015 issue of Weekly Shonen Jump, which hits newsstands in Japan on Monday. The leaked announcement also reveals that the film will contain an original story that focuses on protagonist Yuugi Mutou and rival Seto Kaiba and will include a duel between the pair. Further details will be unveiled at a launch event at Jump Festa next week. A website has been set up at yugioh20th.com but is currently empty.
At the beginning of this week, yugiohmovie.jp posted its first update since the site opened in June 2014: a clock counting down to 10 am JST on December 15. Information about the movie is expected to be formally announced on that date. YUGIOH.com will also be updated with news roughly 12 hours later, noted a 4K Media rep on Facebook.
Development of the new Yu-Gi-Oh! film was initially announced in June by 4K Media, who has already been seeking international distributors for the movie.
Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters to be Remastered
The same issue of WSJ further announces that the original Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters anime will be remastered, also in celebration of the franchise’s 20th anniversary. Numerous duels, including Yuugi vs. Kaiba and Jounouchi vs. Marik, will be remastered as part of this project. The series will begin airing on February 7, 2015 at 7:30 am JST on TV Tokyo and its sister stations.
The scant details of this remastering initiative released thus far suggest that it may be comparable to that given to Sunrise’s Mobile Suit Gundam SEED, another SD digital anime from the aughts that was mastered on video tape and that received an “HD remaster” featuring a 16:9 crop and some reanimated scenes.
