Yu-Gi-Oh! season 5 DVD set box mock-up from Cinedigm

4K Media (Konami) formally announced today on YUGIOH.com and Facebook the upcoming release of the fifth and final season of the classic Yu-Gi-Oh! anime on DVD. “Yu-Gi-Oh! The Official Fifth Season” from Cinedigm’s Flatiron Film Company label will hit store shelves on May 13. The seven-disc box set includes all 40 English-dubbed episodes from season 5, as well as the 12-episode Capsule Monsters story that takes place between the Grand Championship and Dawn of the Duel story arcs.

Like the season 4 DVDs preceding it, this season 5 release is highly anticipated because it brings to home video something that has never been released before. Cinedigm’s season 5 release is the first time the episodic version of Capsule Monsters will come to DVD in Region 1 territory. The 12-episode mini-series premiered on 4Kids TV’s fall 2006 lineup and has since been streaming online.

Prior to its broadcast, Capsule Monsters arrived on home video from FUNimation, who released the show in May 2006 and September 2006 on two DVDs. Each disc contained a 90-minute digested “movie” version of the show. To celebrate the launch of the first DVD in May 2006, 4Kids streamed that entire movie on the old YUGIOH.com website on the eve of its release. The event was an an unprecedented move at the time among anime licensees. The website was inundated by hordes of viewers, overwhelming its servers and causing the site to slow to a crawl.

Cinedigm’s season 5 box set is comprised of three volumes and will be sold at the suggested retail price of $59.95. Fans who already own some of FUNimation’s old season 5 DVDs can also pick up each individual volume to fill the holes their collections. The three volumes are available separately for the following MSRPs:

  • “Yu-Gi-Oh! Season 5 Volume 1”: two DVDs with episodes 185 through 198 and Capsule Monsters episodes 1 through 4, $19.95
  • “Yu-Gi-Oh! Season 5 Volume 2”: three DVDs with Capsule Monsters episodes 5 through 12 and episodes 199 through 213, $24.95
  • “Yu-Gi-Oh! Season 5 Volume 3”: two DVDs with episodes 214 through 224, $19.95

Pre-order today from your favorite online retailer. Welcome back to the home video market, classic Yu-Gi-Oh!, we’ve missed you!

  1. The question now is, will they follow chronological order and release GX, or release Zexal since it’s currently featuring the recent cards.

I hope they release Zexal next since it ties in with the new TCG cards, which would boost the DVDs sales considerably than releasing an older series (The original Yu-Gi-Oh! is obviously the exception to that rule since it’s still being re-aired on Vortexx and Nicktoons).

  2. I think it would be better if they went with GX next, then 5D’s and then ZEXAL.

  3. Hmm…so what about Capsule Monster episodes 5 through 7? Is there a typo when you’re listing the individual volumes?

  4. Yup, it’s a typo. Thanks!

  5. Keep putting in posts. It helps me find out whats coming out next, thanks.
