Yu-Gi-Oh! season 3 DVD set box mock-up from Cinedigm

4K Media (Konami) today formally announced the release of Yu-Gi-Oh! season 3 on DVD! “Yu-Gi-Oh! The Official Third Season” is slated for a January 14, 2014 release from Cinedigm Entertainment’s Flatiron Film label. The box set retails for $44.95 and contains two volumes, each with three discs. Each individual volume is also available separately for $24.95.

The third season of Yu-Gi-Oh! has somewhat of an unusual release history. Like its releases of seasons 1 and 2, former Yu-Gi-Oh! video distributor FUNimation released season 3 as both single volumes and as a complete season set. The singles were released in 2005 over five volumes. The first volume included a limited edition chipboard art box to house the remaining four volumes.

FUNimation’s singles, however, inexplicably skipped the entire Virtual World story arc (episodes 98 through 121) and instead began with the Battle City semifinal duels. Even the official Yu-Gi-Oh! Ultimate Episode Guide from author Tracey West did not acknowledge Noah’s story arc in its listing. And although the singles never claimed to contain the entire third season (each volume only had the subtitle “Enter the Shadow Realm” without any mention of being part of a “complete” or “full” season set), fans were left scratching their heads as to why poor Noah had been neglected.

While the missing Virtual World episodes had always been streaming for free on 4Kids Entertainment’s websites and later, on Hulu, they only made their way to home video in mid-2008 as part of “Yu-Gi-Oh! The Complete 3rd Season,” which was one of FUNimation’s last Yu-Gi-Oh! DVDs. Since its release, that product has often been sold for inflated prices by secondhand dealers because of its limited production run.

For fans who already own FUNimation’s season 3 singles but not the less common season set, Cinedigm’s sale of its individual volumes will come in handy. You’ll want to pick up Cinedigm’s three-disc “Season 3 Volume 1” DVDs to fill the hole in your collection.

As with its previous Yu-Gi-Oh! releases, Cinedigm quietly slipped the street date of these season 3 DVDs to retailers, with no announcements coming from itself or 4K Media. Some online retailers having been taking pre-orders since late September. What are you waiting for? Head over to your favorite online shop and pre-order today!

  1. I suspect they skip the Virtual World arc because it’s so easy to look over and doesn’t affect the main story whatsoever. Didn’t they also cut out a lot of Noah flashbacks later on in the series?

It’s sad since this is my favorite arc.

  2. If that were the case, we might as well not have gotten the Waking the Dragons and Grand Championship story arcs either. :P I really like the Virtual World arc, too. I don’t know about the flashbacks that you mentioned though. In which episode(s) do they originally appear?

  3. Mainly during the second half of Season 3. yu-jyo.net showed a lot, if not all, of the cut scenes. I think most of the flashbacks belonged to Mokuba.

  4. Oh, you mean the flashbacks in the last episode of the season (the recap episode)? I can’t remember whether or not any particular flashbacks with Noah were removed. In general, I do know that flashbacks are sometimes different between the English and Japanese versions, but the only episodes I can think of right now where that specifically happens are the ones involving the final battle against Dartz. I’m sure there are many other examples.

  5. They likely skipped the Virtual World arc because FUNi figured people wanted canon story arcs instead. Had they kept the license, the arc would have likely been released after Waking the Dragons.

  6. No. I’ll give some examples.

In 122, a scene was cut of Mokuba remembering the last conversation he had with Noah. Kaiba asks him what’s wrong, and he tells him it’s nothing.

In Episode 143, as Kaiba and Mokuba fly away in the Blue Eyes White Dragon jet, an image of Noah appears in the sky as the jet flies out of view.

There are other instances, but these are the first two that I could find.

  7. I know Blue-eyes White Dragon is season one, and Dark Magician is season two, but which duel monster is this exactly?

  8. Dark Paladin. He appears during the Yugi vs. Kaiba duel.

  9. How much it cost
