[YGO: TAS] Critiquing Through Abridging? Scholarly Analysis of Little Kuriboh’s Work

How often is the actual content from the Yu-Gi-Oh! anime brought up in schools as part of a serious discussion? Probably not very often. What about that from Yu-Gi-Oh: The Abridged Series? Ditto. And how often does this content undergo critical, scholarly analysis? Hahaha, oh wow!

That’s why I was pleasantly surprised when I stumbled upon “Dueling with Censorship: Yu-Gi-Oh: The Abridged Series’ Pastiche of Dubbing,” a paper published in AngeLingo, an online literary journal produced by undergrads at the University of Southern California. Written by Charlie Furman, a USC senior, the paper examines Little Kuriboh’s YGOTAS using concepts from film theory and argues that the series uses pastiche to draw in a diverse audience and to make a statement about 4Kids’ treatment of the dubbed anime.

While it’s not from some internationally recognized, peer-reviewed journal, it’s still captivating, if not a little amusing, to see the hobby and source of entertainment of so many people being given such serious, formal treatment. If you have an interest in film/television studies, or you revel in the joys of academia, give the paper a read!

  1. I’m actually in the process of expanding the paper out into a study of abridging as a whole – and it’d be really great if you could give me any direction/contact information/etc for any abridgers.
