Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters episode 1 in Japanese, uploaded by 4Kids

A few hours ago, 4Kids uploaded the first two episodes of Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters onto their official YouTube channel. Both episodes are available in the dubbed English version and in the original, unedited Japanese version. This is the first time that 4Kids has uploaded any version of YGO DM onto YouTube.

The Japanese episodes appear to be the TV versions, as they contain the still image after the opening and ending that normally displays the sponsors of the show (when the it airs on Japanese TV). The episodes also contain the next-episode preview, which weren’t available even on 4Kids’ three, short-lived Yu-Gi-Oh! Uncut DVDs. Unfortunately for non-speakers of Japanese, the videos are raws — they don’t have any subtitles, neither hardsubs nor YouTube captions.

Right now, the episodes seem to be region locked and are only available to users who reside in United States.

For those of you who have been living under a rock (or who just don’t pay attention to this stuff ^^;), 4Kids Entertainment is the owner of the Yu-Gi-Oh! property outside of Asia. They’re widely known for localizing and editing their anime acquisitions. In late 2004, they began releasing Yu-Gi-Oh! Uncut DVDs, but discontinued them after only three volumes (nine episodes). Since then, there have been no new appearances of the uncut Japanese episodes… until now.

Personally, I think streaming the Japanese episodes on YouTube is great news! This finally gives fans a free, legal way to watch the show in all of its original, uncut, uncensored glory. Even if subtitles aren’t available, it at least provides a way for everyone to take a peek at what they have been missing — the original music, the Japanese voice acting, the unadulterated video…

4Kids knows that there are fans who want this. They say, right in the video descriptions, “Completely unfettered, un-edited. You asked for it, you’ve got it.” Thanks, 4Kids! I know that beggars can’t be choosers, but could you include subs with the Japanese videos? :)

Interestingly, YGO: TAS’ Little Kuriboh mentions that the appearance of these episodes come less than a day after his YouTube account, CardGamesFTW, subscribed to 4Kids’ channel. Is this a strange, creepy coincidence, or does 4Kids have its scary corporate eye on LK?

Finally, to all of the Irish Yu-Gi-Oh! fans out there, I hope you all had a wonderful Saint Patrick’s Day today!

  1. Actually you CAN view them outside of the US, all you need to do is set your Youtube region to Worldwide and you can view it just fine. It works for me, and I live in the UK XD

  2. I actually don’t think that works because YouTube’s region-blocking system looks at your IP address, not at your YouTube country settings. Since you live in the UK, you can test this by trying to watch some music videos. Chances are that they’ll be blocked.

However, the good news is that 4Kids updated their YGO videos’ region-settings on the 1st of April so that anyone outside of Asia can watch them. Hooray!
